LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A gang member was sentenced today to life in prison without the possibility of parole in connection with the shooting death of a security guard during a botched robbery at a medical marijuana clinic in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Craig Mitchell denied the defense’s request for a new trial for Brandon Daniels, one of four men convicted in the Oct. 1, 2008, slaying of Noe Campos Gonzales.
Daniels, 31, was found guilty March 29 of first-degree murder, attempted robbery and commercial burglary.
Jurors also found true a special circumstance allegation that the 25-year-old security guard was murdered during an attempted robbery or burglary, along with a gang allegation.
Daniels was a “Los Angeles top 10 most wanted” fugitive when he was arrested three years ago in connection with the botched takeover robbery at about 3:45 p.m. at the La Brea Collective at 812 S. La Brea Ave.
The gunman, Leon Banks, and co-defendant Lovie Matthews already have been tried and convicted of first-degree murder, attempted robbery and commercial burglary, and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to Deputy District Attorney Candice Henry.
A fourth man, David Gardiner, pleaded no contest last month to first-degree murder and was sentenced to 45 years to life in prison.
